They chose it over the S&W #3, Schofield comes after the adoption of the M1873.<br /><br />SNOB MODE The M1917's aren't *pistols* they're revolvers /SNOB MODE<br /><br />WW1 production of both the M1911 pistol and M1903 rifle fell far behind the needs of the Army leading to secondary standards and issue of the M1917 revolvers and M1917 rifle (and M1915 rifles to give to National Guard units in trade for their M1903's).<br /><br />There's YOUR rabbit hole!
