The Beechcraft Starship

I was at work performing maintenance on an aircraft(B767-400) and my co workers and I  and we got to talking about futuristic airplane designs and the maintenance requirements.  The Starship was mentioned and I googled the word on my kinda smart phone, and saw some pics of a very amazing airplane.

This from Wiki:

The Starship is noteworthy for its carbon fiber composite airframe, canard design, lack of centrally located vertical tail, and pusher engine/propeller configuration.
Carbon fiber composite was used to varying degrees on military aircraft, but at the time the Starship was certified, no civilian aircraft certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration had ever used it so extensively. Beech chose carbon fiber composite for its durability and high strength-to-weight ratio. According to Beech, the Starship weighs less than it would have if it were built from aluminum. Nonetheless, the empty weight of production aircraft exceeded the target by several thousand pounds.[8][9][10]
Beech studied several configurations before settling on a canard configuration in early 1980.[11] As configured, the Starship is difficult to stall—the forward surface stalls before the main lifting surface, which allows the nose to drop and more-normal flight to resume.[12]
A traditionally located vertical tail would have transmitted propeller noise into the airframe.[13] In its place, directional stability and control is provided by rudders mounted in the winglets (Beechcraft called them tipsails) at the tips of the wings.[14][15]
Mounting the engines so that the propellers are facing rearward, pushing rather than pulling the aircraft, has the potential of a quieter ride since the propellers are further from the passengers and because vortices from the propeller tips do not strike the fuselage sides. However, the propellers are operating in a turbulent airflow in the pusher configuration (due to airflow past the wings moving aft in vortex sheets) and high-velocity exhaust gasses are discharged directly into the props, thus the resulting external propeller noise is more choppy and raucous than otherwise would be the case.[8]
Flight instrumentation for the Starship included a 14-tube Proline 4 AMS-850 "glass cockpit" supplied by Rockwell Collins, the first application of an all-glass cockpit in a business aircraft.[1]

Operational history

Beechcraft Starship
Beech sold only eleven Starships in the three years following its certification. Beech attributed the slow sales to the economic slowdown in the late-1980s, the novelty of the Starship, and the tax on luxury items that was in effect in the United States at the time. In an effort to stimulate demand, Beech began offering two-year leases on new Starships in 1991.[16]
The last Starship, NC-53, was produced in 1995. In 2003 Beechcraft determined that supporting such a small fleet of airplanes was cost-prohibitive and began scrapping and incinerating the aircraft under its control. The aircraft were sent to the Evergreen Air Center located at the Pinal Airpark in Arizona for destruction. Beech worked with owners of privately-owned Starships to replace their airplanes with other Beech aircraft such as the Premier I jet.[17][18]
In 2004 Raytheon sold its entire inventory of Starship parts to a Starship owner for a fraction of its retail value.[19]
Hawker Beechcraft continues to offer support by phone.[20] Rockwell Collins has maintained full support for the AMS-850 avionics suite.

I also saw Bob Scherer's Blog   on the Starship.   It is full of neat factoids on this interesting airplane.

     Revolutionary design.
The aviation community accepts new concepts slowly and evolution is generally preferred over revolution.  While many potential buyers were awestruck by the Starship's beauty, most chose to sit on the fence for a few years to see if the Starship proved to be a viable design.  The Starship was radically different from conventional aircraft when introduced in the mid 1980's and heralded four revolutionary technologies:
a)  First certificated all glass cockpit and FMS
b)  First certificated all composite business class aircraft (still the only certificated composite wing)
c)  First certificated tandem wing (canard) aircraft.
d)  First certificated business class twin turboprop pusher
We all now know that the glass cockpit is superior to steam gauges and that composites are superior to metal for airframe construction.  The canard vs. conventional configuration is still a topic of heated debate, however.  All I can say is, why in the world would you want to have a tail mounted stabilizer that pushes DOWN when the basic purpose of an aircraft is to lift you into the air?  But most aerodynamicists I've spoken with argue that the canard's forward wing is so heavily loaded that the resulting drag leads to no gain in efficiency over a tail in back design.  It also seems to be true that pusher props are no more efficient than a tractor.  That's because the airflow to the props is disturbed by the fuselage and wing ahead of them.  But a pusher definitely creates a much quieter cabin and far less vibration than a tractor.  The Starship is extremely quiet inside and cabin noise levels seem more like a jet than a turboprop.  Normal conversations can be had without raising your voice and virtually no vibration can be felt inside the airplane.  A pusher design also allows the propellers to be mounted very close together because they don't have a fuselage between them.  The Starships props are only 8 inches apart, yielding nearly centerline thrust from each engine.  During an engine out situation in the Starship, yaw is virtually unnoticeable and is completely countered by the yaw damper, if engaged;  No need to step on the good engine.  Also, from personal experience, I can safely argue that the canard design yields a superior ride.  Wings mounted at each end of the fuselage, combined with the heavy wing loading of the canard ends up dampening the bumps in bad air.

The Taxpayer subsized green energy failures...

It is no secret that President Obama’s and green-energy supporters’ (from both parties) foray into venture capitalism has not gone well. But the extent of its failure has been largely ignored by the press. Sure, single instances garner attention as they happen, but they ignore past failures in order to make it seem like a rare case.
The truth is that the problem is widespread. The government’s picking winners and losers in the energy market has cost taxpayers billions of dollars, and the rate of failure, cronyism, and corruption at the companies receiving the subsidies is substantial. The fact that some companies are not under financial duress does not make the policy a success. It simply means that our taxpayer dollars subsidized companies that would’ve found the financial support in the private market.
So far, 34 companies that were offered federal support from taxpayers are faltering — either having gone bankrupt or laying off workers or heading for bankruptcy. This list includes only those companies that received federal money from the Obama Administration’s Department of Energy and other agencies. The amount of money indicated does not reflect how much was actually received or spent but how much was offered. The amount also does not include other state, local, and federal tax credits and subsidies, which push the amount of money these companies have received from taxpayers even higher.
The complete list of faltering or bankrupt green-energy companies:
  1. Evergreen Solar ($25 million)*
  2. SpectraWatt ($500,000)*
  3. Solyndra ($535 million)*
  4. Beacon Power ($43 million)*
  5. Nevada Geothermal ($98.5 million)
  6. SunPower ($1.2 billion)
  7. First Solar ($1.46 billion)
  8. Babcock and Brown ($178 million)
  9. EnerDel’s subsidiary Ener1 ($118.5 million)*
  10. Amonix ($5.9 million)
  11. Fisker Automotive ($529 million)
  12. Abound Solar ($400 million)*
  13. A123 Systems ($279 million)*
  14. Willard and Kelsey Solar Group ($700,981)*
  15. Johnson Controls ($299 million)
  16. Schneider Electric ($86 million)
  17. Brightsource ($1.6 billion)
  18. ECOtality ($126.2 million)
  19. Raser Technologies ($33 million)*
  20. Energy Conversion Devices ($13.3 million)*
  21. Mountain Plaza, Inc. ($2 million)*
  22. Olsen’s Crop Service and Olsen’s Mills Acquisition Company ($10 million)*
  23. Range Fuels ($80 million)*
  24. Thompson River Power ($6.5 million)*
  25. Stirling Energy Systems ($7 million)*
  26. Azure Dynamics ($5.4 million)*
  27. GreenVolts ($500,000)
  28. Vestas ($50 million)
  29. LG Chem’s subsidiary Compact Power ($151 million)
  30. Nordic Windpower ($16 million)*
  31. Navistar ($39 million)
  32. Satcon ($3 million)*
  33. Konarka Technologies Inc. ($20 million)*
  34. Mascoma Corp. ($100 million)
*Denotes companies that have filed for bankruptcy.
The problem begins with the issue of government picking winners and losers in the first place. Venture capitalist firms exist for this very reason, and they choose what to invest in by looking at companies’ business models and deciding if they are worthy. When the government plays venture capitalist, it tends to reward companies that are connected to the policymakers themselves or because it sounds nice to “invest” in green energy.
The 2009 stimulus set aside $80 billion to subsidize politically preferred energy projects. Since that time, 1,900 investigations have been opened to look into stimulus waste, fraud, and abuse (although not all are linked to the green-energy funds), and nearly 600 convictions have been made. Of that $80 billion in clean energy loans, grants, and tax credits, at least 10 percent has gone to companies that have since either gone bankrupt or are circling the drain.
CORRECTION:
Figures for four companies have been updated: Beacon Power received $43 million from the U.S. government, not $69 million as originally reported. Azure Dynamics received $5.4 million from the federal government, not $120 million as originally reported. Compact Power Inc. received $151 million as part of the stimulus, not $150 million as originally reported. Willard and Kelsey Solar Group received $700,981 in government funding, not $6 million as originally reported.
The following companies have been removed from the original list: AES’s subsidiary Eastern Energy, LSP Energy and Uni-Solar did not receive government-backed loans, based on additional research. The National Renewable Energy Lab did received $200 million in stimulus funding, but it is a government laboratory.

The Ghost of World War II

I was reading one of the U.K's newspapers since I tend to get a different perspective than the Obama kissing lamestream media here in the  states and I saw this.  My being a history nut really got a kick out of these.  When I was in Germany especially on maneuvers  in the forest, when I was in the First Infantry Division(The Big Red One) I almost imagined my being with a company of WWII GI's looking for krauts.  Over there history has a longer span than here in America.

The Ghosts of World War II: The photographs found at flea markets superimposed on to modern street scenes

  • Images depict almost transparent soldiers racing through our streets as they look today
  • Fascinating series shows contrast between wartorn cities in the 1930s and 1940s and pleasant neighbourhoods now.
This haunting collection of images shows what it would look like if the ghosts of World War II returned to our streets.
The remarkable pictures overlay modern scenes from France with atmospheric photographs taken in the same place during the war.
Historical expert Jo Teeuwisse, from Amsterdam, began the project after finding 300 old negatives at a flea market in her home city depicting familiar places in a very different context.

She researched the background to each of the most interesting finds and created a beautiful series of pictures by super-imposing the old pictures on top of new ones.
Now she has rediscovered photographs of soldiers at war in France and across Europe and put together further sets of evocative and emotional designs.
Miss Teeuwisse believes that making war scenes familiar by linking them to somewhere we recognise heightens their impact.
'I knew what happened there, but knowing the exact spot of some detail will etch it into your visual memory,' she said.

Her work goes much further than the visual, too.
The website of her organisation, Historical Consultancy, reads: 'For years we have been researching daily life before and during the Second World war, not just gathering information but also interviewing eye witnesses and recreating certain aspects of history to gain a unique insight into that era.'
The organisation works with authors, film and TV companies, museums, schools, documentary makers, designers, theatre productions and many more.
It has helped individuals trying to find out more about their family history, carrying out close research into any events from between 1900 and 1950.

Miss Teeuwisse says she began the project as a research tool, but now continues it mostly because of her 'passion for history and fascination with the subject.'
A selection of her photos created across Europe, from Rotterdam to Utrecht to Sicily are available to view on her Flickr site and on Facebook.
The emotional photos juxtapose wartorn paths piled high with rubble with newly painted signposts and tarmacked roads.
Pretty houses and fashionable shops have been built where the dead once lay and German soldiers clashed with Allied troops.
In these poignant shots, however, we have a tiny window into that world.

American...Choose your Bird......

I palmed this from GOC

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 1,000 puppeteers and public broadcasting supporters have signed on for a march on the National Mall in Washington three days before the election. The so-called Million Puppet March being planned online is scheduled for Nov. 3. By Wednesday morning, more than 1,000 participants had responded on Facebook, saying they would attend.
So it's really gonna be a 1000 puppet march and I wonder who is pulling their string......

Did I get it right...?

I didn't realize Clinton was suspended from practicing law in Arkansas.
He also paid a $25,000.00 fine there; this was all over the Lewinski incident.
He also paid a $850,000.00 settlement over the Lewinski incident.

He was also disbarred from practicing law in front of the Supreme Court

So Bill Clinton, a disbarred lawyer, a President
who was impeached for lying under oath,
Asks the American people to believe
him when he says the best thing for the
Country is 4 more years of Obama.

Just wanted to make sure I had it right!

A peaceful goodbye for Command Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley

Published: October 16, 2012 Updated 12 hours ago
ROBIN TRIMARCHI rtrimarchi@ledger-enquirer.com Maj. Gen. H.R. McMaster talks with Debbie Kimble, Command Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley's daughter, as he hands her the folded flag that draped her father's casket. McMaster is the Commanding General for the Maneuver Center of Excellence. Kimble was escorted to the funeral services by actor Sam Elliott, left, who portrayed Plumley in the film "We Were Soldiers." 10.16.12
ROBIN TRIMARCHI
No one understood war better than Basil Plumley, but he was about to find peace. His Size 12 combat boots were stained with mud and blood from the three great wars of the 20th century and now he was being laid to rest among thousands of other warriors.
Plumley died last week. He didn't die on a battlefield. He was 92, and he died surrounded by a family that knew him as a hero who doted on grandchildren and great-grandchildren and seldom talked about the service that earned him membership in a fraternity more exclusive than the Medal of Honor.
Like many of the hundreds who were there Tuesday, Joe Galloway knew him as a command sergeant major. The legendary war correspondent met Plumley in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam -- a place neither thought they would survive.
"He was the very essence of a command sergeant major. They stand at the right hand of God and sometimes they speak with more authority than God," Galloway said, before eulogizing his longtime friend.
The former UPI reporter calls himself a "scribbler." In 1992, he recorded the heroics of Ia Drang and turned memories of that deadly battle into a best-selling book that he co-authored with Lt. Gen. Hal Moore, the commander of that outmanned Cavalry unit.
"We Were Soldiers Once … and Young" was a thank-you note to every soldier that served in what Galloway refers to as an "orphaned war."
Plumley was one of only 324 to earn the rare honor of a Combat Infantryman's Badge with two stars, signifying his efforts in three wars. This compares to the 3,476 recipients of the Medal of Honor.
He has been called "America's Soldier," but Plumley's memorial service was as low-key as the life he has lived since retiring from the Army in 1974 after more than 30 years.
There were clues to his lofty status. Retired Gen. Eric Shinseki, who is the current U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs and former Chief of Staff of the Army, was in attendance. Also at the services were: retired Lt. Gen. Carmen Cavezza, executive director of Columbus State University's Cunningham Center for Leadership Development and former Fort Benning commanding general; Gen. Ken Leuer, former Fort Benning commanding general and Ranger Hall of Fame member; Medal of Honor recipient retired Col. Bruce Crandall; Medal of Honor recipient retired Col. Joe Marm; retired Sgt. 1st Class Ernie Savage, the senior member of the "Lost Platoon" in the Battle of Ia Drang; and former Columbus mayor Bob Poydasheff, among others.
But neither the memorial at the Infantry Center Chapel nor the brief graveside service at the Main Post Cemetery veered far from the traditional military burial.
Lt. Col. Jim Murphy, a Fort Benning chaplain, officiated and reminded family and friends that God was a warrior and that God respected warriors.
Galloway described the terror Plumley could strike in the heart of rookie soldiers. Before emotions overtook him he said, "I know of no man can rest better under that flag than Basil Plumley."
Plumley's family invited members of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Hood, Texas, to participate and an honor guard from that unit escorted his remains from the chapel. As their journey up the center aisle began, Moore managed a final salute to his honored comrade.
At the graveside, daughter Debbie Kimble sat between Maj. Gen. H.R. McMaster, the commanding general of the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, and actor Sam Elliott, a family friend.
From the honor guard, McMaster accepted the flag that had covered the coffin, then kneeled and presented it to Kimble. Snapping to attention, the general gave her a somber salute that in one gesture delivered a nation's gratitude.
Elliott met the Plumleys when he portrayed the sergeant major in the movie version of Galloway and Moore's book. Known for his cowboy demeanor and deep baritone voice, he spent weeks getting to know the colorful character he brought to life in "We Were Soldiers."
A deep friendship developed that Elliott describes as a father-son relationship. Through the years, the popular character actor has snuck into town to visit the Plumleys. Tuesday, he sat with the family and was Kimble's escort.
Elliott said playing Plumley was a great responsibility. "I've played many historic figures, but Sgt. Plumley wasn't just a great man. He was there."
As an actor, he often seems larger than life. But in Plumley, Elliott found a person that was truly larger than life.
"That's the difference," he said. "I pretend to be, but Sgt. Plumley was real. He lived it."

WHEN - he finally completed his transformation of America into a Socialist State, people woke up--- but it was too late. Add these up one by one and you get a phenomenal score that points to the fact that Barrack Hussein Obama is determined to turn America into a Marxist-Socialist society. All of the items in the preceding paragraphs have been put into place. All can be documented very easily. Before you disavow this do an Internet search. The last paragraph alone is not yet cast in stone.

You and I will write that paragraph, will it read as above or will it be a more happy ending for most of America?

Don't just belittle the opposition. Search for the truth. We all need to pull together or watch the demise of a free democratic society. Pray for Americans to seek the truth and take action for it will keep us FREE. Our biggest enemy is not China, Russia, North Korea or Iran. Our biggest enemy is a contingent of politicians in Washington, DC . The government will not help,
so we need to do it ourselves.

Question....will you delete this, or pass it on to others who don't know about Obama's actions and plans for the USA, so that they may know how to vote in November, 2012 and the ensuing years?
It's your decision.

I believe it does matter. How about you?

WHEN - November 2012 comes, it will matter who you vote for!

There are 2 paths, the destiny of our country will be decided

I was cruising my blogroll as I do everyday and saw this on Macbourne's Musing

This video shows the choices that we as a citizen have this election, to decide the course of this country.  If we will keep our freedom that has been passed down from generation to generation or if we will go the way of Europe drowning in debt and kissing the asses of the bureaucrats and politicians that believe that they know better than we do on how to live our lives.

Boeing 727 crashed on TV

Discovery crashes a Boeing 727-212 in the Mexican desert for a flight test. and passenger suvivibility test.  I was watching it and decided to do a search on background information.

They used a Boeing727-212(first owner was Singapore air)  I posted a listing that I reproduced here back when I first started blogging.  I found the plane codes when I was searching for information on the airport movies(here)

History
The 727-100 had been in service barely a year when Boeing began serious consideration of a stretched, greater capacity development.
This resulted in the 727-200, which Boeing announced it was developing in August 1965. The 727-200 was essentially a minimum change development of the 100, the only major change being the 6.10m (20ft) fuselage stretch, which increased maximum seating to 189 passengers. The 727-200's stretch consisted of two 3.05m (10ft) plugs, one forward and one rear of the wing. Otherwise the 727-100 and 200 shared common engines, fuel tank capacity and the same maximum takeoff weight.
The first flight of the 727-200 occurred on July 27 1967, with certification granted in late November that year. The -200 was placed into service by launch customer Northeast Airlines (this airline was later acquired by Delta) the following month, by which time total 727 orders for both models had exceeded 500.
The 727-200 helped broaden the sales appeal of the 727 considerably and snared significant sales. However the 200 was restricted by its relatively short range, due to it having the same fuel capacity as the 727-100, so Boeing developed the increased range Advanced 727-200. First flown in March 1972 changes introduced on the Advanced model included increased fuel capacity, and thus range, the option of more powerful engines, quieter engine nacelles and strengthened structure. The Advanced remained the primary 727-200 production model until production ceased in 1984.
The 727-200 remains popular with passengers and pilots but it does not meet Stage 3 noise requirements. To overcome this a number of hushkit programs are on offer while Valsan converted 23 727s to its Stage 3 compliant Quiet 727 standard (before the company collapsed). This retrofit included installing JT8D-217s on the outer pylons and acoustic treatment of the centre engine. Other 727s have been fitted with winglets for improved performance.

Boeing Aircraft Co customer codes

If y'll  always wondered where the number behind the airplane model number is:    I mentioned the 707 mentioned in the origional airplane movie was a Boeing 707 348C   means that the airplane was a 707 300 series airplane and the 48 was the build customer for that airplane.  Looking at our trusty list below, the launch customer was AER LINGUShttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aer_Lingus

Unique, fixed Boeing customer codes have been used by Boeing Commercial Airplanes to identify the original customer for an aircraft since the advent of the Boeing 707.
An example would be a Boeing 747-400 ordered by British Airways would be a Boeing 747-436 (36 being the customer code). The codes do not change if the aircraft is subsequently sold as they reflect the original configuration of the aircraft.
Before the 707, Boeing used a generally similar system to identify the presence of detailed variations or options requested by particular customers, but the codes were not customer-specific. A Boeing 377 Stratocruiser built to the requirements of United Air Lines, for instance, was designated a Model 377-10-34. Today, the permanent code denoting United Airlines is 22, not 34.
The order of codes has not been sequential, as the first 707 was designated the 707-120 by Boeing, so the customer codes started at 21:
  • 21 to 99 - First Sequence
  • 01 to 19 - Second Sequence
  • A0 to Z9 - Third Sequence
  • 0A to 9Z - Fourth Sequence
  • AA to ZZ - Fifth and current sequence
