Greece wants Raparations for WWII

I first blogged about Greece and Debt in 2012 shortly when I started blogging.  I have blogged about Greece quite a bit, especially in the beginning because of the debt issues.  Greece was forced to institute "Austerity" measures to get the money from the EU and Germany is the economic powerhouse and they are calling most of the shots.  Now apparently Greece is asking for reparations from Germany for war damages from WWII.  I have severe issues with this.  Germany was decimated by WWII and they rebuilt themselves after the war.  Greece had the same opportunity and seemed to squandered their opportunity and now they are trying to get more stuff From Germany after the bailout.  Greece has promised more than they can deliver to their citizens and now they are passing the cup to Germany.   Now Greece is wanting even more money from Germany.  If I was the Germans, I would say "Nein".  "Dis hund nicht Jagt" or this dog don't hunt.

I was reading this article, I have been harping on debt almost as soon as I started blogging.  The E.U thinks that they bailed out Greece, but they basically kicked the can down the road.  Greece will not implement the austerity measures, the politicians have promised soo much free stuff to the population, now the bill is coming due and the population are angry.  They still want all their "free stuff" that has been promised.  The same thing will come here in a few years when the democrat base want their free stuff and the spigot shuts off.
Something that I noticed in this article is that the government will legislate to force the bondholders to eat the loss.  This disturbs me on several levels  The government will legislate you to lose your money to accept a political settlement?   What happened to the rule of contract law? What about the indenture terms?  The government by imperial fiat made a decree and removed the collective action clause.   What does this do for the bond market?  I guarantee private investors will dump bonds as soon as they are able.  People buy bonds for investments and as a way to save their money in a volatile market.  After this and the imperial edict, they will bail.

Left-wing politicians in Greece are pushing for Germany to pay reparations for the damages it caused during World War II. The parliamentary committee has called for a debate on the subject.
For its part, Germany has refused to entertain the notion that it owes anything to Greece. They have refused to pay and have refused to even negotiate with Greece.
But experts in Germany’s Parliament have released a report that undermines the German government position.
The Scientific Services of the Parliament released their findings which were commissioned by the Left Party. In part, the report states that the government is not violating international law by their position, but it is “by no means compulsory.” The report further recommends taking the case to the International Court of Justice to receive legal guidance in the matter.

When the Wehrmacht withdrew from Greece in October 1944 after three and a half years of occupation, it literally left behind “scorched land”: the economy, currency and infrastructure were completely destroyed.
When the Wehrmacht withdrew from Greece in October 1944 after three and a half years of occupation, it literally left behind “scorched land”: the economy, currency and infrastructure were completely destroyed.
The court at the Hague cannot on its own take up the case since the actions in question occurred over 70 years ago. The German government would need to agree to the process which it has explicitly rejected.
Back in June, the Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office was asked about the Greek demands and he stated that neither side wished to have the International Court of Justice settle the question.
The Left Party’s deputy, Heike Hansel, said that the report showed that the German government is no longer able to avoid their responsibility for the past actions of the country. He continued by stating that the German government had “completely failed on this issue.”
The government’s position is that all WWII issues were resolved in 1990 with the Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany (also referred to as the Two Plus Four Agreement).
The treaty was signed by both East and West Germany. Those are the “Two” in the “Two Plus Four.” The “Four” who signed were the US, the USSR, France and the UK. It allowed for Germany to become a unified and fully sovereign country.
For its part, Germany accepted its current border with Poland and renounced the other claims it had made to territory.
Reparations were not included in the agreement and Greece was not a party in the negotiations for the treaty.
Germany points to the 1945 Potsdam Conference as resolving the question of reparations. The Soviet Union settled the reparation claims of its satellite countries in large part by supplying them with industrial equipment. For their part, the other Allied countries resolved to settle the reparation claims of other countries by dividing up German industrial and naval assets.

The big three.
                                         The big three at Potsdam
Germany also signed an agreement with twelve other nations in the 1950s. Greece was included in this agreement and received 115 million Deutsche marks in 1960 as the final settlement to its claims.
Germany has spent 76 billion euros to compensate for the crimes its Nazi leaders committed in WWII.
What remains to be seen is whether the new government in Greece which was elected on July 7 will continue to push Germany for the reparations.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was elected on July 7, is expected to make his first trip to Germany.
Poland is also demanding reparations from Germany. Between the two countries, $1.2 trillion in claims are being levied against the Germans.
Poland is expected to release a report on September 1 which coincides with the 80th anniversary of the start of WWII. The report is expected to demand $850 billion from the Germans.
Of course, all this posturing is mainly a way for politicians in the two countries to grab the attention of their voters. The current ruling party in Greece ran on a platform of getting justice from Germany and reducing the country’s debt. They have thus far achieved neither goal so they need to show the voters that they are still working on the issues.

Monday Music "Like a Virgin" by Madonna

I am continuing my series of music that I don't like or care for.  This time I went with Madonna "Like a Virgin".  When I first heard this song, the nasally New York accent was a definite turn off.  Even now I will turn the station when this song comes on my 80's channel on my Sirius/XM.  My opinion of Madonna changed when I heard her "Live to tell" and "like a Prayer".  From what I heard she had used a voice coach to lose the nasally New York accent she had.  I remember in the 90's when she was in her "Hedonistic" stage and Rush Limbaugh commented that she will reinvent herself as a symbol of "motherhood".  He said this in 1994 and a couple of years later Madonna revamped her image as a Mom.  For some reason I remembered that because it was so incongruous.   I do like her later music but I wish she would stay out of politics..

"Like a Virgin" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna for her second studio album Like a Virgin (1984). It was released on October 31, 1984, by Sire Records as the album's lead single. The song was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, and produced by Nile Rodgers; Steinberg said that the song was inspired by his personal experiences of romance. "Like a Virgin" was chosen for Madonna by Michael Ostin of Warner Bros. Records after listening to a demo sung by Kelly. Rodgers initially felt that the song did not have a sufficient hook, but subsequently changed his opinion after the song was stuck in his head.

Musically, "Like a Virgin" is a dance-oriented song, composed of two hooks. Madonna's voice is heard in a high register while a continuous arrangement of synths are heard along the bassline. The song's lyrics are ambiguous, consisting of hidden innuendos and open to various interpretations. "Like a Virgin" received positive reviews from music critics, who frequently called it as one of the defining songs for Madonna. It became her first number-one single on the record charts in Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States, while reaching the top ten elsewhere.
The song's music video portrayed Madonna sailing down the canals of Venice in a gondola, as well as roaming around a palace wearing a white wedding dress. With the video, scholars noted Madonna's portrayal of a sexually independent and strong woman, similarity of a man wearing a lion's mask to that of Saint Mark and the link between the eroticism in the video and the vitality of Venice. Madonna has performed the song in seven of her concert tours. Most of the time, her performances of "Like a Virgin" were associated with strong reaction and uproar from the media.
"Like a Virgin" has been covered by a number of artists and has appeared in or been referenced in feature films such as Reservoir Dogs, Moulin Rouge! and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Family groups sought to ban it as they believed the song promoted sex outside or without marriage. On the other hand, Madonna's public persona of an indomitable, sexually unashamed, supremely confident woman was widely accepted by the younger generation who emulated her style and fashion. Scholars have credited "Like a Virgin" as the song which cemented her position as a pop culture icon.

The music video, directed by Mary Lambert, who worked with Madonna in her video for "Borderline", was shot in Venice and partly in New York City in July 1984. Madonna was portrayed as a knowing virgin, a figment of the pornographic mind, as she walked through marble rooms, wearing a wedding gown. It alternated with scenes of a provocative-looking Madonna on board a gondola.[42] She commented, "[Lambert] wanted me to be the modern-day, worldly-wise girl that I am. But then we wanted to go back in time and use myself as an actual virgin."The video starts with Madonna boarding on a boat from the Brooklyn Bridge and travels to Venice. As she steps down into the city, she moves like a stripper and undulated sinuously. She wears a black dress and blue pants with a number of Christian symbol embedded jewelry around her neck. She sings the song at full volume as she watches a lion walking between the columns of the Piazza San Marco of Venice and along the statue of Saint Mark.
A number of game-playing involving carnival masks, men and lions are portrayed with allusions to eighteenth-century practices and Saint Mark. Sheila Whiteley, author of Women and popular music: sexuality, identity, and subjectivity, felt that Madonna's image signified a denial of sexual knowledge, but also portrayed her in simulated writhing on a gondola, thus underpinning the simulation of deceit. The intrusion of a male lion, confirmed the underlying bestial discourse of both mythological fairy tale and pornographic sex. Whiteley observed that in the video, Madonna's lover wears the lion's mask and while cavorting with him, Madonna sheds the veneer of innocence and shows her propensity for wild animal passions. Having instilled desire, metaphorically she turns her lover into a Beast.  Madonna commented about shooting with the lion:
"The lion didn't do anything he was supposed to do, and I ended up leaning against this pillar with his head in my crotch... I thought he was going to take a bite out of me so I lifted the veil I was wearing and had a stare-down with him and he opened his mouth and let out this huge roar. I got so frightened my heart fell in my shoe. When he finally walked away, the director yelled 'Cut' and I had to take a long breather. But I could really relate to the lion. I feel like in a past life I was a lion or a cat or something."

Weird Al did a parody of her song and it was well received.  It was said that you know that you made it as a star when Weird Al does a parody of you.

"Like a Surgeon" is a song recorded by "Weird Al" Yankovic that appears on his third studio album, Dare to Be Stupid (1985). It was released as the album's second single on June 4, 1985, by Scotti Brothers Records. It was issued as a 7", 12", and picture disc. A parody of the pop song "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, its lyrics describe a hospital environment, with the same melody as Madonna's original. The track was written by Yankovic and Madonna, with the latter coming up with the parody's title, an act Yankovic generally discourages. Rick Derringer served as the executive producer.

"Like a Surgeon" was well received by music critics, who praised Yankovic's take on Madonna's single. Another critic called it "as good" as "Like a Virgin". In the United States, it peaked at number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his fifth entry in that country at the time. It also peaked in the top forty of Australia and Canada, with the former peaking at number 19. For live performances of the recording, Yankovic further borrowed elements from Madonna's renditions, singing live in a hospital surrounding, sporting similar outfits and costumes.

The music video is set in a hospital. It parodies several elements of the promotional video for "Like a Virgin", famously set in Venice; Yankovic singing on a moving gurney references Madonna on a canal boat, and both videos feature a lion at the beginning. During one scene, a Madonna wannabe is sitting in a corner filing her nails. At the end of the "Like a Surgeon" music video, dance moves and scene changes spoof the video for Madonna's "Burning Up", then Yankovic and two dancers perform a routine that spoofs the video for "Lucky Star". Both songs appear on Madonna's first album. The video also includes the famous PA announcement from The Three Stooges ("Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard"). The visual would later be included on Yankovic's 1992 video album The "Weird Al" Yankovic Video Library.
Filming was done at a closed hospital that had been turned into a set for various productions where hospital shots were needed. The lion was real, and Yankovic recalled several of the actors were slightly intimidated by the lion being led though the sets.

I am just tired........

I am just tired.....We have had a couple of shootings last weekend by a guy that hated mexicans because they would interfere with the implementation of the "Green new deal" and a guy that was an Elizabeth Warren supporter and the liberal left lost their mind and immediately started blaming President Trump and Republicans and NRA members and anyone else that don't reside in their bubble...but I am really tired...

We are having the same people that a couple of months ago screaming and having"The Vapors" about concentrations camps ran by the government, all of a sudden want me to hand my various assorted bullet launchers to the same benevolent government.......
We are having the same people  who were screeching like gibbon monkeys about the evil of President Trump and the government now want me to hand my assorted bullet launchers to the government of President Trump
We are having the same people that are shrieking "tolerance" and "Diversity" and "acceptance" for everyone......unless you are a conservative gun owner than you need to "Just die"...

These are the people that want to kill me, my family and my friends because they don't like me.  I would explain things to these people but I am just tired and I have reached a point that I don't want to talk anymore...
There are others on the left that want to send me, my family and friends to concentration camps because they don't like me because I am a conservative lawful gun owner...
On a Signpost in NYC
We are having people that flat out believe that they are in the right and they believe that we are "Nazi's " and we are subhumans and that we deserve everything bad that happens to us.  They believe that they are on the "right" side of history and they claim to hate violence unless the violence is targeting their political opponents.  I used to say "You want to get rid of all guns so only the government will have them so we can be Safe?"  and they uniformly tell me yes....and I inwardly shudder and think of Dachau and I have Blogged about it several times...but I am just tired...
We have people on the left that want to use violence on their fellow Americans because they don't like how they look, act or think.....The Left wants to so ostracize the people that they don't like because they and their media hacks wants to make sure that Donald Trump is a one term president and the people that support him pay in blood and tears and pain.  They want to strip their opponents of political power and influence and totally marginalize them and they use their foot soldiers for Soros also known as "Antifa" like the brownshirts of old But I am really tired....

The left wants to totally control the levers of government, they want to have total control over you and yours because they are the compassionate ones and they by their education, are totally superior to us "Dirt People", they want us to keep working and being productive to support the system so they can skim off it lord over us like the nobles of old.

The endgame is to totally strip the power of the middle class because we are the checks and balances on those that would seek to rule us by imperial fiat.   We are considered the modern day Kulaks and the modern left wants to break us like their hero Stalin did to the Kulaks of old.  The Modern left wants to demonize us, harass us, ridicule us and strip us of our 2nd amendment rights so they can do to us like Stalin did to his "Kulaks"

Here is a quote from a rant I did back in 2015 before Donald Trump was even on the radar and Hillary was warming up for her coronation because it was "Her Turn".

" Now to the 3rd part of my rant.  the EndGame....You have noticed the drumbeats of the SJW's against white people and this is by design...Most all of them have read the book by Saul Alinsky, The Rules for Radicals
Most of the SJW's are schooled in Marxist thoughts and beliefs..this is by intent,

In Rules for Radicals, several themes persist throughout Alinsky’s lessons to future community organizers. The most notable is his use of symbol construction to strengthen the unity within an organization. Often, he would draw on loyalty to a particular church or religious affiliation to create a firmly structured organization with which to operate. The reason being that symbols by which communities could identify themselves created strongly structured organizations that were easier to mobilize in implementing direct action. Once the community was united behind a common symbol, Alinsky would find a common enemy for the community to be united against.
The use of common enemy against a community was done to promote another theme of Rules for Radicals, nonviolent conflict as a uniting element in communities. Alinsky would find an external antagonist to turn into a common enemy for the community within which he was operating. Often, this enemy would be a local politician or agency that had some involvement with activity that was causing detriment to the community. His goal was to unite a group through conflict with an external antagonist. Once the enemy was established, the community would come together in opposition of it.
This management of conflict heightened awareness within the community as to the similarities its members shared as well as what differentiated them from those outside of their organization. The use of conflict also allowed for the goal of the group to be clearly defined. With an established external antagonist, the community’s goal would be to defeat that enemy, whether it be a politician, policy, or opposing agency.

I have mentioned in the past that the modern SJW's are Marxist and they are doing what history taught them.  I will  make a historical point..remember the external antagonist that is required for the SJW's?

According to the political theory of Marxism–Leninism of the early 20th century, the kulaks were class enemies of the poorer peasants. Vladimir Ilyich Lenin described them as "bloodsuckers, vampires, plunderers of the people and profiteers, who fatten on famine.” Marxism–Leninism had intended a revolution to liberate poor peasants and farm laborers alongside the proletariat (urban and industrial workers). In addition, the planned economy of Soviet Bolshevism required the collectivisation of farms and land to allow industrialisation or conversion to large-scale agricultural production. In practice, government officials violently seized kulak farms and murdered resisters; others were deported to labor camps.

According to the political theory of Marxism–Obamaism of the early 21th century, the white people were class enemies of the poorer peasants. Barack Obama described them as "bloodsuckers, vampires, bitter clingers, plunderers of the people and profiteers, who fatten on white privilege.” Marxism–Obamaism intended a revolution to liberate poor urban people and farm laborers alongside the cube dweller. In addition, the planned economy of Globalism Bolshevism required the collectivization of assets to allow  the future green economy or conversion to large-scale clean energy production. In practice, government officials violently seized white middle class assets and murdered resisters; others were deported to FEMA camps..

It isn't much of a stretch, I see history replaying before me, I see the same thing that Lenin and later Stalin did to break the power of the kulaks whom were land owning peasants.  In the modern sense, they need to break what they call the political power of the middle class to guarantee their power.  If they can use social pressure to make a law to seize the assets of people that are considered "class enemies".  Remember the 401K's that millions of people have....most of them are middle class and white.  That is an example.  That is billions of dollars sitting in there where the government can't touch it....But the government can change the rules, then seize it....You doubt me?  look at Greece, Cyprus and other places.  The government seized assets for the "Common good".  See a parallel?  the outrage you see against whites is just an excuse for plunder on a wide scale.  The government in the name of social justice and equality can and will seize assets....They will use the social outrage, the same thing Lenin and Stalin used against the Kulaks to further the transforming of Russia into the Soviet Union.  The enemy of the political elites are the middle class, the SJW's are useful idiots being used to create a have and an have not society.  The middle class is a check on the power of the political elite.  The elitist would have a complete society that depended on them for sustenance..once you control their sustenance, you control them....then you can do whatever you wanted.  That is the Endgame."

I am just tired...I don't want to explain anymore...........

another quick post..and some upgrades.

I still am on Jury duty, interesting case....all I can say.  Well some doings here at casa de Garabaldi

First off I performed an upgrade on my truck, Amazon had a sale on these things...
The price was $79 and it was wireless from the camera to the monitor.

I did run a tap from the camera to the rear taillights and tapped into the reverse lights so the camera would come on when the reverse lights came on.   I do have to get some shielding for the connectors, apparently they are picking up interferance sometimes when I use the brakes.  or actually when my son uses the brakes because he is the one driving the truck right now.

I also ran the power wire behind the headliner to clean up the appearance.  It used the what I call a cigarette lighter plug so I fished that behind the dash.   Note the bracket behind the monitor.
I replaced my Sirius/XM Antenna, the old one was 14 years old and getting BBQed on the roof of the truck played heck with the electronics.  I ran the new one inside the truck and as long as the antenna has a clear view of the sky it will work.   I zip tied the excess slack inside the A piller behind the trim piece along with the excess from the power cord for the monitor.
This is what the camera looks like on top of the license plate.

I also replaced the ventviser that flew off earlier this year.  I got a "in the channel" version so it should last longer.

Monday Music "When Doves Cry" by Prince

I am continuing my run of songs that I don't care for, I liked Prince's early music, from his Party like its 1999 and "Little Red Corvette", but for some reason this song raised my gag reflex.  I flat out didn't care for the song.  Price is or was a musical genius, he could play last I heard, 17 different instruments.   He was known for changing his name to a symbol because of a dispute with his record label, and he was known as the "Great Purple One".  Prince was very eccentric but he was a musical genius

"When Doves Cry" is a song by American musician Prince, and the lead single from his 1984 album Purple Rain. It was a worldwide hit, and his first American number one single, topping the charts for five weeks. According to Billboard magazine, it was the top-selling single of the year. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, shipping two million units in the United States. It was the last single released by a solo artist to receive such certification before the certification requirements were lowered in 1989.
The song ranked number 52 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
Following Prince's death, the song re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number eight, its first appearance in the top 10 since the week ending September 1, 1984. As of April 30, 2016, it has sold 1,385,448 copies in the United States.

According to the Purple Rain DVD, Prince was asked by the director to write a song to match the theme of a particular segment of the film – one that involved intermingled parental difficulties and a love affair. The next morning, Prince had composed two songs, one of which was "When Doves Cry". According to Per Nilsen, Prince's biographer, the song was inspired by his relationship with Vanity 6 member Susan Moonsie.
Prince wrote and composed "When Doves Cry" after all the other tracks were complete on Purple Rain. In addition to providing vocals, he played all instruments on the track. The song's texture is remarkably stark. There is no bass line, which is very unusual for an '80s dance song; Prince said that there originally was a bass line but, after a conversation with singer Jill Jones, he decided that the song was too conventional with it included. The song features an intro of a guitar solo and a Linn LM-1 drum machine, followed by a looped guttural vocal. After the lyrics, there is another, much longer, guitar and synthesizer solo. The song ends on a classical music-inspired keyboard piece backed by another synthesizer solo. Keyboardist Matt Fink revealed in 2014 that the baroque synthesizer solo was recorded by Prince at half speed and an octave lower against a half-speed backing track, then sped up to create the final version. Fink was then tasked to learn and perform the solo at the album's speed.
On versions edited for radio, either the song fades out as the long guitar and synthesizer solo begins, or the solo is eliminated altogether and the song skips to the ending with Prince's harmonizing and classical finish.

Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It is the first to feature the billing of his band the Revolution, and is the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. The album was released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records.
In the United States the album debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 the week of July 14, 1984 with approximately 1.5 million copies sold. After four weeks on chart, it reached No. 1 on August 4, 1984. The first two singles from the album, "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy", topped the US singles charts, and were hits around the world, while the title track went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Purple Rain was present on the Billboard 200 for a total of 122 weeks.
Prince and the Revolution won a 1984 Grammy Award for Purple Rain, for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, the four composers (Nelson, Coleman, Prince, and Melvoin) won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, and the album was nominated for Album of the Year. Purple Rain also won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score in 1985. As of 2008, it has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, making it the third-best-selling soundtrack album of all time. The album was certified 13-times platinum (diamond) by the RIAA. Purple Rain is regularly ranked among the best albums in music history and is widely regarded as Prince's magnum opus along with his 1987 double album Sign o' the Times. In 2012, the album was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important".

The music video (directed by Prince himself) was released on MTV in June 1984. It opens with white doves emerging from double doors to reveal Prince in a bathtub. It also includes scenes from the Purple Rain film interspersed with shots of The Revolution performing and dancing in a white room. The final portion of the video incorporates a mirrored frame of the left half of the picture, creating a doubling effect. The video was nominated for Best Choreography at 1985's MTV Video Music Awards.[14] The video sparked controversy among network executives, who thought that its sexual nature was too explicit for television.

One of the Greatest Carrier landings in History

I had gotten an email or a comment about a Blogpost I did back in 2014 about the C-130 that flew with 432 people in it.  I had also done a post on the last voyage of the South Vietnamese Navy.  It to this day still bothers me, because we were suppose to support them after the Paris Peace Accord but Richard Nixon who was president in 1973 who guaranteed the support was gone by 1975 due to Watergate and Gerald Ford was President.  President Ford couldn't get anything through Congress that was full of antiwar democrats, the antiwar GI spitting hippies from the 1960's moved into the halls of congress in the 1970's.  Gerald Ford had burned whatever little political capital he had pardoning Richard Nixon, what was the right thing to do to close that chapter of the country, but the antiwar democrats still wanted blood so they killed any aid for the South that needed to rebuild their stocks after the War.  And in 1975 North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam in a conventional military invasion.  I remember something when we had gone to Disney world in Orlando, we had stayed at one of the parks and there was a guy my age working there.  Now Disney hires a LOT of what is called "H1B" hires or people not from the United States.  They wear a nametag with their name and what country they are from.  This guy had a tag that said "South Vietnam".  I had asked him about that and he said "I am from the South, not the godless communist north".  I was born outside Saigon not Ho cho minh city.  My heart still is with the people from South Vietnam."  I was surprised and amazed to see that.  He was the only one like that I have seen.  I didn't want to talk more for fear of reminding the guy more of what he had lost.  Perhaps he would have been glad to talk about it, but I didn't want to open a wound as it were.

By the end of April 1975, North Vietnamese forces were closing in on Saigon. It was apparent that South Vietnam was going to fall. The US was already evacuating people from major airports. However, the NVA was on the outskirts of Saigon and several airports were coming under artillery attack. With many people still stuck in Vietnam, the United States launched Operation Frequent Wind, a massive helicopter evacuation to air-lift as many evacuees as possible. From April 29 to April 30, over 7000 people were airlifted out of South Vietnam to the safety of American warships offshore. The Operation was a source for many of the most well known images of the Vietnam war.
While many are familiar with the large helicopter evacuation, the self-imposed evacuation of tens of thousands of South Vietnamese people is less known. Evacuating the country by aircraft and boat, South Vietnamese civilians traveled to the American evacuation fleet. In this article, we will look at one of these escapes as one man risked everything to get his family out of Vietnam. It involves the carrier USS Midway (CV-41), a Cessna O-1, and one of the most daring escapes ever.

An example of the chaos onboard the USS Midway with numerous helicopters waiting to land.
On 29 April 1975, the evacuation of South Vietnam was in full swing. However, not everyone could get to the evacuation points. South Vietnamese Air Force Major Buang-Ly was one of these people. He sought to escape the country with his family and reach the US evacuation fleet. Loading his wife and five children into a Cessna O-1 “Bird Dog”, he took off from Con Son island south of mainland Vietnam. Taking off and setting a course for the ocean, he came under enemy fire from the ground several times. Luckily, Buang-Ly managed to make it out to sea without any damage. Once he got offshore, he began a search for the US Naval ships in the area. Through an amazing stroke of luck, he managed to locate the US fleet offshore.
As we looked over the assembled ships, he saw the carrier USS Midway (CV-41). Unfortunately, the Midway was in the middle of landing the evacuation helicopters. Her flight deck was littered with helicopters and even more were waiting to land. Buang-Ly began to circle the carrier with his landing lights turned on. Crewmembers on board the USS Midway soon spotted the small aircraft. Attempts to contact the aircraft through radio communications failed. Buang-Ly continued to circle the carrier while the crew tried to figure out how to deal with this new situation.

An example of a helicopter ditching alongside the USS Midway. The pilot in this photo was rescued by boat.
Due to the overwhelmingly large number of helicopters, the carrier was having many aircraft ditch alongside after dropping the passengers off. Rescue boats would then pick up the crew and bring them back to the ships. At first, it was hoped that that the Cessna could do the same thing. However, as Buang-Ly made another pass over the carrier, a spotter reported seeing around four people in the Cessna. All thoughts of having the plane ditch were quickly abandoned as the craft was severely overloaded. It was thought unlikely that all passengers could be rescued from the plane quick enough if it ditched into the sea.
By this point, the Cessna began to swoop over the carrier. This occurred several times before Major Buang-Ly managed to drop a note onto the flight deck. The note simply read,
“Can you move the helicopter to the other side, I can land on your runway, I can fly for one hour more, we have enough time to move. Please rescue me! Major Buang, wife and 5 child.”
Realizing that time was quickly running out, the crew of the Midway sprang into action. The Captain of the USS Midway, Lawrence Chambers, quickly ordered all arresting cables to be stowed and the helicopters on deck to be moved out of the way. If they couldn’t be moved fast enough, they were to be pushed over the side of the carrier. He ordered any and all volunteers to the deck to help with moving the choppers. Midway crewmembers of all ranks hurried to the deck and began clear the deck in preparation for landing.

A UH-1 of the South Vietnamese air force is pushed off the flight deck of the USS Midway. It is estimated that up to 10 million dollars worth of equipment was pushed overboard.  I would have loved to had one of those helicopters.
Once the task was finished and the deck clear, the Cessna lined up with the carrier. Conditions were less than ideal. The ceiling was 500 feet, visibility had been reduced to 5 miles, and it began to rain lightly. To make matters worse, the wind picked up to 15 knots and 5 additional helicopters had already landed on the Midway. Captain Chambers ordered those helicopters immediately pushed overboard and the ship to speed into the wind at 25 knots. Meanwhile, the ships radio crew began to broadcast numerous messages in both English and Vietnamese about carrier landing hazards. The threat of downdrafts generated behind carriers was particularly worrisome. The many crewmembers who had helped clear the decks earlier were now crowded onto the deck themselves. Everyone was intently watching as the Cessna began making its landing run.
The Cessna O-1 just prior to touchdown on the flight deck of the USS Midway. The landing was described as a textbook example of a perfect landing.
There are numerous things that can go wrong when landing on a carrier. However, none of those things occurred and Major Buang-Ly managed a perfect landing on the USS Midway. The Cessna touched down, bounced once and came to a stop alongside the Midway’s island. The crewmembers on deck immediately broke into wild cheering and they swarmed the small Cessna, clapping and congratulating the Major for his feat.

Following his landing, Buang-Ly was escorted to the Bridge of the Midway where Captain Chambers himself congratulated the Major for, “his outstanding airmanship and his bravery in risking everything on a gamble beyond the point of no return without knowing for certain a carrier would be where he needed it.” Not only had Major Buang-Ly managed to fly his family out of Vietnam, but he had somehow managed to guess where the US fleet would be. The crew of the USS Midway were so impressed with the exploit of Major Buang-Ly that they set up a fund to get him and his family settled into the United States.

O-1 Birddog in Pensacola in my favorite Museum...Did I mention that you can walk up to the planes and touch them?  unlike most museums?

So ends one of the greatest escapes in history. Despite the odds, Buang-Ly and his family managed to escape Vietnam for the United States where they are today. The O-1 aircraft he used to escape has been preserved at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. Major Buang-Ly also holds the distinction of being the only Vietnamese pilot to land a fixed wing aircraft aboard a United States aircraft carrier.
greatest carrier landing

Swarms of crewmembers surround Major Buang-Ly and his family, congratulating them for their heroic feat.
A final note of interest in this story is that of the Midway’s captain, Lawrence Chambers. He had only been commanding the carrier for a few weeks prior to this incident. While he was worried that he would be removed from command for allowing the landing to take place, he allowed it because, “When a man has the courage to put his family in a plane and make a daring escape like that, you have to have the heart to let him in.”

Fact Checking the Democrats....

I got this from the AP News, I was kinda surprised that a major media outlet was actually fact-checking the democrats in their debate.  I was expecting the "Pre-approval" from all the media outlets.   Here is the Link, I got the link from Drudge.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic presidential contenders have some inconvenient truths to grapple with.
It’s not easy, for example, to summon foreboding words on the economy — accurately — when the U.S. has been having its longest expansion in history.
Related: AP Fact Check
Health care for all raises questions of costs to average taxpayers that the candidates are loath to confront head on.
And in slamming President Donald Trump relentlessly for his treatment of migrants, the Democrats gloss over the record of President Barack Obama (and his vice president, Joe Biden), whose administration deported them by the millions and housed many children in the border “cages” they assail Trump for using now.
The candidates will be pressed on the economy, health care, immigration and much more in their second round of debates, this week in Detroit.
A sampling of the campaign rhetoric on a variety of subjects and how it compares with the facts:
THE CAGES
KAMALA HARRIS: “You look at the fact that this is a president who has pushed policies that’s been about putting babies in cages at the border in the name of security when in fact what it is, is a human rights abuse being committed by the United States government.” — remarks at NAACP forum Wednesday in Detroit.
PETE BUTTIGIEG: “We should call out hypocrisy when we see it. For a party that associates itself with Christianity to say it is OK to suggest that God would smile on the division of families at the hands of federal agents, that God would condone putting children in cages,” that party “has lost all claim to ever use religious language.” — June debate .
THE FACTS: There is hypocrisy to be called out here.
By Buttigieg’s standard, the Democratic Party has also lost its claim to invoke religion — because the “cages” were built and used by the Obama administration. Harris, a California senator, calls them a human rights abuse, but, like other Democrats, solely blames Trump.
The facilities are sectioned-off, chain-link indoor pens where children who come to the border without adults or who are separated from adults in detention are temporarily housed. The children are divided by age and sex.
A year ago, Associated Press photographs showing young people in such enclosures were misrepresented online as depicting child detentions by Trump and denounced by some Democrats and activists as illustrating Trump’s cruelty. In fact, the photos were taken in 2014 during the Obama administration.
Many Democrats continue to exploit the imagery of “babies in cages” — as Harris put it — without acknowledging Obama used the facilities, too. His administration built the McAllen, Texas, center with chain-link holding areas in 2014.
Under Trump, journalists have witnessed migrants crowded into fetid chain-link quarters. The maltreatment of migrants is the responsibility of the Trump administration — and arguably Congress, for not approving more money for better care.
But the facilities are standard fare through administrations and the caged-babies accusations stand as one of the most persistent distortions by the 2020 Democrats.
___

JOE BIDEN: “Under Trump, there have been horrifying scenes at the border of kids being kept in cages, tear-gassing asylum seekers, ripping children from their mothers’ arms.” — June 24 opinion piece in the Miami Herald about his Latin America policy.
THE FACTS: Again, the scenes of kids in cages go back to the administration Biden served.
He is correct that U.S. authorities have fired tear gas to repel migrants trying to get across the border. Biden and other Democrats are also correct in identifying widespread family separations as a consequence of Trump’s policy. His now-suspended zero-tolerance policy resulted in thousands of children being removed from their parents in holding centers, something the Obama administration did not do routinely.
Another form of family separation was seen, however, in the Obama years. The record deportation of 3 million migrants during Obama’s presidency drove many families apart as some members were forced out of the U.S. while loved ones weren’t.
___
IMMIGRATION
BIDEN: “There’s 11 million undocumented (people), they’ve increased the solvency of the Social Security system by 12 years, because they’re all paying in.” — candidate forum in Iowa, July 16.
THE FACTS: He’s wrong that “all” people in the country illegally are paying into Social Security and that they’ve extended the program’s solvency by a dozen years.
He’s right, though, that they help the nation’s retirement program because millions do contribute to it and they are not permitted to draw benefits.
According to a 2013 Social Security Administration report , the most recent of its kind, roughly 3 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally were contributing to Social Security through their work. Others were not working or were employed in the underground economy.
Biden is correct in suggesting that illegal immigration has significantly boosted the program. His campaign clarified to The Associated Press that he misspoke when he said people in the country illegally increased Social Security’s solvency by 12 years. He meant to say they’ve added $12 billion to Social Security’s finances.
They’ve actually supported the Social Security system by even more than that. The agency’s 2013 report estimated the system gained $12 billion from immigrants and their employers over just one year, 2010. Employers and workers evenly split the 12.4 percent contribution to the system.
Another government estimate says “half of undocumented immigrants are working on the books” but that may be outdated; it’s from 2005.
___

HEALTH CARE
BERNIE SANDERS: ”‘Medicare for All’ would reduce overall health care spending in our country.” — July 17 speech on his health plan.
THE FACTS: That remains to be seen. Savings from Medicare for All are not a slam dunk.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in a report this year that total spending under a single-payer system, such as the one proposed by the Vermont senator, “might be higher or lower than under the current system depending on the key features of the new system.”
Those features involve payment rates for hospitals and doctors, which are not fully spelled out by Sanders, as well as the estimated cost of generous benefits that include long-term care services and no copays and deductibles.
Sanders’ figure of $5 trillion over 10 years in health cost savings comes from a study by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The lead author has been a Sanders political supporter.
Sanders also cites a savings estimate of $2 trillion over 10 years taken from a study from the libertarian Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia. But the author of that study says that Medicare for All advocates are mischaracterizing his conclusions.
A report this year by the nonprofit Rand think tank estimated that Medicare for All would do the opposite of what Sanders is promising, modestly raising national health spending.
Part of the reason is the generous benefits. Virtually free comprehensive medical care would lead to big increases in demand.
The Rand study modeled a hypothetical scenario in which a plan similar to Sanders’ legislation had taken effect this year.
___

SANDERS, on the effects of his health plan and other expensive proposals on the public: “Yes, they will pay more in taxes but less in health care.” — June debate.
THE FACTS: This is almost surely true.
Although he had to be pressed on the question, Sanders is almost alone among the candidates who support Medicare for All in acknowledging that broadly higher taxes would be needed to pay for it. He would consider — and probably not be able to avoid — a tax increase on the middle class in exchange for health care without copayments, deductibles and the like. It’s a given that consumers will pay less for health care if the government is picking up the bills.
Several of Sanders’ rivals have dodged the tough financing questions, speaking only of taxing rich people and “Wall Street.” Analysts say that’s not going to cover the costs of government-financed universal care.
___

ECONOMY
ELIZABETH WARREN: “When I look at the economy today, I see a lot to worry about. ... I see a manufacturing sector in recession. ... A generation of stagnant wages and rising costs for basics like housing, child care, and education (has) forced American families to take on more debt than ever before.... Whether it’s this year or next year, the odds of another economic downturn are high — and growing.” — Medium blog Monday.
THE FACTS: The Massachusetts senator is exaggerating some of these threats. It’s true that U.S. manufacturers are struggling as a result of slower overseas growth and the Trump administration’s trade wars, which have meant that many U.S. goods face retaliatory tariffs overseas. But U.S. factories have faced rough spots before during the current expansion, particularly in late 2015 and 2016, when their output actually declined. Yet economic growth continued. Manufacturing is no longer large enough to necessarily pull the rest of the economy into recession.
And Americans are in better financial shape than Warren suggests. While household debt has risen 6.8% in the past decade, that figure isn’t adjusted for population growth or inflation. On a per capita basis, household debt levels have actually fallen.
Economists typically compare debt with income as a way of gauging Americans’ ability to pay off their loans. Currently such household debt is equivalent to 101% of disposable income. While that number may seem high, it actually peaked at 136% in the fourth quarter of 2007, just as the recession began, and has fallen steadily since.
Also, interest rates are at historically low levels, making it easier for borrowers to manage their debts. Currently, households are devoting less than 10% of their incomes to debt service, down from roughly 13% a decade ago.
As for what she calls a manufacturing recession, that’s a judgment call, not a clearly defined standard. Factory output actually has risen slightly over the past year. She defines a manufacturing recession as two straight declines in quarterly production as measured by the Federal Reserve, and that’s what happened in the first half of this year.
___
HARRIS: “People are working, they’re working two and three jobs. In our America people should only have to work one job to have a roof over their head and be able to put food on their table.” — July 12 radio interview.
THE FACTS: Most Americans, by far, only work one job, and the numbers who juggle more than one have declined over a quarter century.
In the mid-1990s, the percentage of workers holding multiple jobs peaked at 6.5%. The rate dropped significantly , even through the Great Recession, and has been hovering for a nearly a decade at about 5% or a little lower. In the latest monthly figures , from June, 5.2% of workers were holding more than one job.
Hispanic and Asian workers are consistently less likely than white and black workers to be holding multiple jobs. Women are more likely to be doing so than men, though the gap narrowed slightly during Trump’s first year.
Multiple jobholding rates in June 2019 : women, 5.6%; men, 4.6%; black, 5.1%; white, 5.2%; Hispanic, 3.7%; Asian, 3.0%.
Kirsten Allen, speaking for the Harris campaign, said the senator often hears from people who have to work more than one job to make ends meet, “teachers specifically,” and has a plan for teachers to be paid more. But in her rhetoric about Americans “working two and three jobs,” Harris does not make that distinction.
___
LAW ENFORCEMENT
BUTTIGIEG: “When I took office, we had no recognizable promotion or accountability system for promotions in the department. We couldn’t even find and publish numbers on cases involving use of force. So we started doing that.”— at the NAACP forum Wednesday in Detroit.
THE FACTS: Those changes at the South Bend, Indiana, Police Department, which Buttigieg oversees as the mayor, didn’t happen swiftly or without prompting.
Buttigieg fired his police chief shortly after he became mayor in 2012 and installed a new one.
But it wasn’t until September 2018 that the city established a promotion policy, following a 2015 complaint from a female officer who said she was passed over for a promotion and complaints in 2016 from two black officers who said they were held back from promotions at the police agency, according to local news reports.
The city didn’t begin publishing use of force data — which shows how many times an officer used force on a civilian — until 2017, five years after Buttigieg got into office and after complaints about police brutality, including a federal lawsuit that was settled in 2018. The use of force data include the time, date, and type of force.
___

AUTO INDUSTRY
HARRIS: “Some estimate that as many as 700,000 autoworkers are going to lose their job before the end of the year.” — remarks in July 12 radio interview.
THE FACTS: This isn’t happening. Harris mischaracterized the findings of a study that is also outdated.
In July 2018 the Center for Automotive Research laid out a variety of scenarios for potential job losses across all U.S. industries touched by the auto business — not just autoworkers — if a number of new tariffs and policies that Trump threatened were enacted. The worst case was 750,000. But those hypothetical losses went well beyond autoworkers, to include workers at restaurants, retail stores and any business that benefits from the auto industry.
In any event, the center revised its study in February 2019, with a worst-case scenario down to 367,000 job losses across all industries. And since then, the administration lifted tariffs on steel and aluminum products coming from Canada and Mexico, further minimizing the impact on the auto industry.
The auto industry has grown under Obama and Trump both. Although it’s facing a leveling off in demand, it still posts strong numbers. It is not at risk of the catastrophe Harris raises as a possibility — the loss of 3 in 4 autoworkers in the remainder of this year.

The Magic of Compounded Interest

We are pretty good about living under our means.  That is why I have a 20 year old F-150, Hey it works well and the occasional repair is much better than a note.  The spousal unit drives a 10 year old Edge, we don't carry a balance on our credit card..we have only 1.  I do new hire tours at my place of employment and I explain the magic of compounded interest in their financial future.  I use a phrase a good friend of mine used when I first met him 10 years ago.

My Friend goofing off, this was about 10 years ago

"Nobody takes better care of a old you than a young you, take advantage of the 401K match and every time you get a raise, you bump up your your percentage. so when you retire, you ain't shopping for cat food to supplement  your social security"  I get some strange looks but they remember that and that is the intent.  If you have financial freedom, you have a lot of options.

This meme is kinda tongue in cheek, but there is truth to this picture.  When you waste your money on frills or bad habits, you lose whatever you spent on the bad habits.  This stuff does you no good for you and it is the death of a 1000 cuts.  Each by itself don't mean much but when combined it adds up quickly, and then factor years of buying this stuff and you wonder why you are broke.

compound interest formula and benefits

“Compound interest is the Eighth Wonder of the World. He who understands it, earns it; he who doesn’t, pays it.”
Albert Einstein supposedly said that. Lots of quotes get attributed to him that he didn’t actually say, and this may be one of them; I personally don’t see the guy who imagined riding a light beam to figure out the Theory of Relativity waxing poetic about compound interest.
But even if Einstein really didn’t say compound interest was the Eighth Wonder of the World, it’s still a good point. Compound interest is pretty dang awesome. It’s a powerful concept — one that can mightily strengthen, or weaken, your finances. The man who understands it will have a tool to increase his net worth; the man who doesn’t will go through life stuck in a paycheck mentality.
My son recently opened up a savings account, and it offered me the chance to explain compound interest to him. It didn’t go well. It’s one of those financial concepts that’s so simple that you take it for granted. Consequently, when you’re forced to explain it to a child, you realize you don’t have as much of a grasp on it as you thought you did. Einstein also supposedly said, “If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.” Again, even if he didn’t say that, it’s a good point.
If your dad never sat you down to talk compound interest, you’re in luck; having honed my explanation on Gus, I’ll now pass it along to you.

What Is Compound Interest?

To understand compound interest, it’s useful to understand simple interest first.
Simple interest is calculated on the principal or the original amount of a deposit or loan. It’s really, well, simple to figure out.
Let’s say you take out a loan for $10,000 at a simple interest rate of 5%. The duration of the loan is four years.
To calculate the interest that’ll accumulate on the loan, you’d use the following formula:
Principal x interest rate x term of the loan
Plugging in our numbers, it would be:
$10,000 x .05 x 4 = $2,000
So that $10,000 loan will cost you $2,000 in simple interest.
Car loans, home mortgages, and student loans use simple interest. A loan you take from a family member or friend will likely use simple interest (if they charge you interest at all).
Now that you understand simple interest, we can move to compound interest.
Compound interest is calculated on the principal amount and — this is key — also on the accumulated interest of previous periods. It’s interest on interest.
Here’s what the compound interest formula looks like:
P (1 + r/n) (nt) – P
[P = Principal; r = annual interest rate in percentage terms; n = number of compounding periods for a year; t = number of years money is invested or borrowed]
Yeah, it looks confusing, but let’s plug in our numbers from the simple interest example to see what we’d pay if the interest was compounded.
So we got a $10,000 loan that compounds annually at 5%. The duration of the loan is 4 years. What would we pay in interest? Let’s look at the progression of the math:
$10,000 (1+.05/1)(1×4) – $10,000 →
$10,000 (1+.05/1)(4) – $10,000 →
$10,000 (1.21550625) – $10,000 →
$12,155.0625 – $10,000 = $2,155.06
So on a four-year loan that’s compounded annually, we’d pay $2,155.06 in compound interest. That’s $155.06 more than a loan issued on simple interest. Calculating interest on the interest already accrued on a principal can really add up. And add up fast as we’ll see in an example below.
If you’d rather not do the math yourself, there are plenty of compound interest calculators online.
Credit cards calculate balances on compound interest. Instead of compounding annually, credit card companies compound monthly. The high interest rates of credit cards coupled with their monthly compounding is why pretty much every single personal finance guru out there says “Don’t carry a balance on your credit cards!” You end up paying a lot for that extended credit. For example, a credit card balance of $10,000 carried at an interest rate of 20% (compounded monthly) would result in total compound interest of $2,193.91 over one year, or about $183 per month. Imagine what you could do with an extra $183 a month.
Compound interest can work in your favor, though. Big time. When you sock your money into a savings account, banks typically pay compound interest daily on the money you keep with them. Granted, the interest rate you get is pretty crappy — somewhere between .03% and 1% depending on the bank — but when you compound at that rate daily and you keep that money in there for a long time, things can add up.
If you invest in an index fund, you can leverage the power of compound interest by re-investing your earnings into buying more of the index fund which will allow you to earn even more, which you then re-invest, and so on and so forth.

Compounding Periods Have a Big Effect on Earnings

Looking at the compound interest formula, you’ll likely notice that the frequency of compounding periods can have a big effect on your earnings or how much you have to pay in interest. The more compounding periods, the more interest that is accrued. You’ll earn more in interest from a bank that compounds daily compared to a bank that only compounds monthly; you’ll pay more in interest on a loan that compounds monthly compared to one that compounds annually.
So when looking at interest rates for a savings account or loan, make sure to pay attention to how often interest is compounded.

Time Is Your Friend

The real magic of compounding reveals itself over long periods of time. The longer you let your money sit in an account and compound itself, the more money you make.
This is the big point I’ve been trying to make to my son. What’s helped flip on the light bulb in his head is this example from personal finance expert Beth Kobliner:
If you were to save $1,000 a year from age 25 to 34 in a retirement account earning 8% a year, and never invest a penny more, your $10,000 investment would grow to $157,435 by age 65. But if you don’t start saving until you’re 35 years old and then invest $1,000 a year for the next 30 years (that’s a total investment of $30,000), you’ll have only $122,346 by age 65. The bottom line: Start early, so your money has enough time to pile up.
Understanding this concept has helped turn Gus into a tightfisted Scrooge McDuck. “Man, imagine how much interest I can earn since I’m starting at seven years old!” At the beginning of each month, he loves to check his savings account to see how the interest he earns is going up little by little thanks to the magic of compound interest.

Use the Power of Compound Interest to Your Advantage

Understanding compound interest can really help you move ahead with your personal finances. Knowing that credit card companies compound the interest on your balance on a monthly basis should act as an incentive to pay off credit card debt as quickly as possible. Knowing that you can make money from your money should act as an incentive to sock away as much dough as you can and to not touch it for as long as you can.
The key is to get started today. If you’ve got credit card debt, start paying it off now so compound interest doesn’t devour you. If you don’t have a savings or retirement account, start one today so you can leverage the power of this Eighth Wonder of the World.
Now that we have a basic understanding of compound interest, we can start exploring things like APR and APY. We’ll do that in a future article.
My Blog buddy Peter talked about financing and housing cost in his Blogpost.  It kinda inspired this posting.
