Gone to the Range

I wanted to go to the range last week and shoot the Henry and one of my revolvers, I took my son with me and we went to the High speed range near my house AM-CHAR and I was told that since I am not a police/first responder/retired military I can't shoot there, I guess my being a veteran didn't matter.  It really irritated me. especially since they let me shoot there in the past, so the refusal kinda smarted, Oh well.

     Well anyway my son wanted to visit Mack at his place of employment.  I like visiting Mack, besides being a good friend, he is a character and a half.

   Well after harassing Mack for a few minutes...well because I am that kind of guy we got our lane assignments after filling the required paperwork..

  I laid out the rifles and pistols...

The Garand, the Shield, the Henry .357( yes the brass is good, that is a trick of the light) the Enfield 303 and my "console gun" the S&W SIGMA. and gun socks laying all over the place.

   I also laid out some ammo....That is the last of my Blazer....Good Riddance...Not as bad as Tula but ok to plink with, I wouldn't bet the farm on it..if you know what I mean..
We started shooting the Henry....The Henry is .357/38, but let me tell you...it don't like .38 Special, the case length.

  We Started with the Henry but like I said, it don't like .38 Special, but that is all I brought, but luckily Mack came to the rescue with a "found" box of .357 Fiocci that was half full.  The Henry ran through the .357 flawlessly....Thanks Mack, and I am so glad that I had sent the Henry back to the factory to be repaired  several months ago. 
  I then set up the Garand, I brought 1 box of Monarch 150 grain 30-06 ammo for the Garand..

I only had one box, so I fired up one clip and my son fired up the other clip.  This is the first time he fired the Garand,  The rifle fired flawlessly also, I still am tickled that my Garand works well, especially after the misadventures of my first Garand, you can follow the link for my adventures with the rifle type.

    I then brought  up the 303 Enfield, It is one of my old rifles that I bought back in the mid 90's for $80 from an outfit called "Roses" a store in Griffin.   My son commented about the strange sight that the Enfield had, but the rifle is noted for accuracy and if Tommy could raise hell with the Hun in WWI with it, and mess with "Jerry" and the "bloody Nips" in WWII, the rifle is not a slouch.  I have blogged in the past about the Enfield including mine.
    We then brought up the Pistols...I immediately removed the "Go to the Mattresses "ammo so it wouldn't get fired by "accident". 

Like I said, I laid out the ammo to shoot the Sigma and the Shield, both are .40 S&W

We started shooting the pistols..

    and shooting the pistols, I brought quite a bit of .40 S&W to shoot.  And of course Blazer performed as expected.....

  Bad primers and failures to feed or cycle...happened with the blazer ammo several times...the Remington fired good, no hangups, hic-cups or funny stuff.

    It was a good time and of course I am appreciative of Mack and his place of employment for giving us a nice shooting experience in a laid back atmosphere.

    On a different note,   I won a prize at work last week, it was "AMT" day on Thursday at my place of employment.  "AMT" day celebrates the birthday of Charles Taylor, the mechanic that worked on the Wright Flyer for the Wright Brothers.  Well at my employer, they go big with vendors, food and other things.  I didn't attend this year because I spent all day Wednesday doing "Honor Guard" stuff and  did want to spend another "Off day" at work.

    Well anyway I won a prize..

Stinger HL Headlight...Very nice :) and totally unexpected.

Going to the Range

     I went to the high speed range near my house and took the Henry to the Range to see how the repairs went...Remember I shipped off the Rifle back off to Henry to Fix the issues that I had with the rifle.  You can read about it here if you want...

    Well anyway I went to the high speed range and set up the rifle to shoot

I went ahead and set up the work bench..

I then went ahead and loaded the rifle..

This is what the rifle looked like holding 10 rounds in the tube..

I then slid the follower in and the moment of truth rotated the tube to lock it in place.....and it went no problem....YAY!! problem fixed.

I proceeded to shoot 10 rounds...at 10 yards...With the exception of one flyer and that was me.

I then ran the rifle down 25 yards which is the max distance of the range...

   I proceeded to shoot supported  the rest of the rounds

I did have one problem, and it wasn't the rifle....it was the ammo....Tula strikes again....Since I already had the ammo I might as well shoot it up.

I finished firing the rifle until all the 53 rounds were gone...I did have some .38 Special along with the Tula .357 and I went and fired it up...

The rifle shot well, I do know that it isn't a "Tactical rifle." it takes time to reload the tube.  The rifle is really fun to shoot and it shot well

I am very impressed with the rifle and Henry's customer's service.  They got a customer for life for helping me with the rifle issues.

Went to the Range and UPS

I went to the range, The highspeed range near my house reopened and it is owned by AMCHAR of Georgia.  They had a lot of guns for sale, I will talk about one I noticed.

   Well anyway I go back to set up to shoot, I was going to shoot the Garand and the Mosin Nagant, I figured the Nagant would dis/relocate my shoulder far better than any chiropractor would.

    I set up the ammo for the Nagant, I was going to use the stripper clips I bought at NRAAM last year from a vender that specialized in Mosin-Nagants.

I than lay out the ammo for the Garand, the Monarch 150 grain works well and compared to the prices of other ammo is cheap.  Monarch is the Academy house brand, the ammo is made by "Privit" a Russian company and the quality is good and consistent

   Before I could shoot the RSO came back to me and told me that my 7.62X54R is too hot for the range....I couldn't argue..it is their range....but I was surprised...I thought God's own caliber of 30-06 was more powerful.  Oh well.... I boxed up the Nagant and put the ammo away.

I then set up the clips for the Garand

.I could only find 3 of them...I know that I have more....I may have to go buy some more...

I fired at 75 feet, the max distance of the Range and this is the group I shot..Not a bad grouping.  I will adjust the sights over.  Should have done it after 1 clip.

 I finished shooting the Garand, then went ahead and "Snaked it"

  The Garand was fun to shoot and everytime it went "Boom" it was the sound of freedom :) and even nicer, it cycled flawlessly.
 ..I guess I will have to find an excuse to go to the range again :)

     I than set up the little .22LR pistol that I borrowed from my dad

I reloaded and mentally adjusted the sights and point of aim, the .22LR S&W had fixed sights.

Next 30..

I then reloaded again...

And finished off my ammo I had brought...Man that was fun..

 

The reopened range had quite a selection of rifles, ammo and accessories for sale..

And I zeroed in on the "Old school rifles.."

Looked like there were a couple of CAR 98 series of rifles...

I couldn't recognize who made it...

Still not sure.....
I am hoping Jim or Mack will have an idea....

The Zastava M98/48 (often called Mod.98/48, Model. 98/48, Yugo K98k) was a refurbished bolt-action rifle, chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser, a cartridge that was temporary adopted in the years after World War II by the Yugoslav People's Army. This design was a refurbished Mauser Kar98k rifle that had been left-over by Germans or captured by partisans during World War II.

These rifles are actually Karabiner 98k rifles that were left over by Germany or captured by Marshal Tito's partisan army, or Liberation Army. Despite the name of the rifles (which may lead to misunderstandings), the only difference between a Nazi German K98k and a Zastava M98/48 consists of the markings and the front barrel band. They are virtually identical to each other, since they are still the same rifles at their core. 

The original German markings were scrubbed and replaced by the Yugoslav ones. The most noticeable markings are the Yugoslav Crest and the "Preduzece 44"(It refers to the site where it was refurbished; for example "Preduzece 44" stands for "Institute 44"-Kragujevac, Serbia-the current location of Zastava Arms) present on the receiver's ring. Another noticeable marking is the one present on the left side of the receiver, the "Mod. 98/48". The "/48" is absent on all the rifles that have been refurbished before 1950.

   I also saw an Century Arms looked like a HK-91 clone in 308...for about 6 and a half...but it is Century arms...

I then went to the UPS store to mail off my Henry rifle back to the factory, they are warrantied the issue so I went to mail the rifle off....Well the UPS store wouldn't take my rifle...Company policy..

     I then contact UPS via phone and got the run around, had to set up for "residential" pickup...and that was $14 more...The lady on the phone told me that "You could have used the UPS Store", I replied..."I tried....Your company policy forbid them accepting my rifle.to ship."

Needless to say I am not enamored with UPS..

More Casa De Garabaldi and range time..

I took my son to the range to shoot the new rifle I bought a few days ago.  We didn't have a lot of time because he had a date with the church group going to Florida.  We had basically 25 minutes to shoot before we had to leave.  I knew that wasn't a lot of time, but a little range time is better than no range time.  Well we got there and set up the ammo and I had brought one of my revolvers to shoot also.

 I had brought my revolver but I would up not shooting it due to time time crunch.  I pulled out the rifle and laid it on the bench and it took a bit of work to release the retaining rod.  Remember that part of the story....

 I loaded it with a mixture of .38 SPL and .357 magnum.  The rifle is loaded through a tubular magazine

I had a hell of a time getting the retaining rod to rotate the notch to lock it in place.  But I was able to do that.  It took some work but I got the rod locked in place.  The rifle was really easy to shoot, but I had initial problems with the action and some of the .38 rounds didn't eject properly...That is something that is known about the rifle.  The rifle shot the .357 no problem.
   I was able to get the rod out to reload the rifle but I couldn't get the rod to rotate to lock the rod in place.  I attribute this to the rifle being "new".  I wound up going to the guy behind the counter and asking for a set of pliers to help out.

The pliers did the trick, I then loaded the rifle for my son to shoot..

He enjoyed shooting the rifle, he did better with the action that I did, LOL   He made some comment about my age.

I sucked....I know this is breathing but I should have slowed down and focused more on the fundamentals.  I felt rushed because of the outside time factors we were under.   I will take the rifle again to the range and this time I will bring my own set of pliers and hopefully it will get easier as the rifle breaks in.

that closed down near me that was high speed and low drag, but was broken into several times and guns stolen. The belief in the area that it was an inside job and the employees were in on it.  I had commented that if I had scored the lottery, I would have bought the location and the foreclosed range and had totally new people run it,none of the dipshits that were there before.  I wouldn't know which one was in on heists,  maybe even poach my buddy Mack and pay him enough money to make the drive worthwhile for him and have him run the place and offer courses, training and a fun place to shoot.   Doesn't hurt to dream, LOL

    After dropping my son off with the Church group, I then went home to get started on a project that was percolating in my mind....yeah...scary...

..This is a closet in my kitchen that has become a junk collector....

Just the trash out of the closet, not including the stuff that went to goodwill.
  I cleaned up the closet, and repainted it then hung in a new shelf system.  The goal is to neatify stuff and clear off some counter space.

  The project is finished and have started clearing off counter-space.

     And finally on a political note....The democrats have assumed control of the house of representatives....and guess what started already....

 They have already filed.......sheesh
