I recall some vague information about the great war that the British and the French wanted the Americans fed piecemeal into the war under their command for the British and the French viewed the Americans coming over as the panacea of all their manpower needs and the Americans would be under the command of the Europeans.

"Over There" United States Army Soldiers Soldiers in WWI under British Command.
General Pershing Didn't want the Americans fed piecemeal into the war under the command of the Europeans Theater, he believed that Americans should fight and die if necessary under American Officers, not officer of other nationalities. he believed this strongly and fought to keep the Allied Expeditionary force from being piecemealed out to General Haig of the British and General Foch of the French. Although some units of the Americans did get loaned out to the other countries, overall the Americans fought under their own flag and not the flag of another nation.
I clipped this from "American Rifleman," I didn't know about this and thought it was facinating from a historical perspective and having owned both a 03 and a Enfield, I can understand the comparison.
